Quotations on India
“…the mixture of old-world piety and modern progress that is the note of India today.”
I think a British person said it and is very proud of what Britain made out of India. He or she thinks that the British brought the progress to India and that the modern progress is a result of the English colonial policy.
“Wherever the English settle, they never leave England”
I guess that this was said by an Indian person. He wants to express that the British don´t adapt, they force their traditions and tried to build up a little England in India. Maybe he or she wants also criticicse the English who tried to civilize the Indians by forcing their traditions on them because they thought that their culture is the best and all people have to be like them.
There is also a link to the novel “Heat and Dust” because in the beginning of the story the woman in the hostel “our” and means the British and “their” and means the Indians
